Château Maurac
Winemaker and vineyard manager Claude Gaudin works with a number of châteaux in the Haut Medoc region, and one of the best is Château Maurac. This beautiful estate is situated just past the boundary of St. Estèphe, near such well-known neighbors as Château Sociando-Mallet and Château Charmail. The soil is mainly clay with some limestone, hence Merlot plays an important role in the property’s planting. Gaudin’s philosophy is simple: the wine is made in the vineyard. Dense plantation of the vines naturally reduces the yield per vine, resulting in a more concentrated wine. Green harvest during the summer further limits the yield. Traditional vinification and aging with just the right touch of new oak give structure and extra dimensions of flavor and complexity to the finished wine.
